In keeping with latest craze of putting werewolves/vampires into every type of literature, Brandvold has created his version of the "wild" west with ghouls in his Dust of The Damned. In this West the bounty hunters are are called "ghoul" hunters and there is a bounty office in every town paying gold for the heads of all sorts of ghouls. It seems that the Union used werewolves to fight the Civil War and with the end of the war these ghouls went west where there were other ghouls and the Wild West got wilder. Here Uriah Zane and Marshal Angel Coffin fight the Hell Angels. The Hell Angels are the left over werewolves from the Civil War. Now Brandvold mixes dragons, sex, witches, vampires, sex, lost tribe, sex, with Jesse James, sex, and a city of gold to create a rousing action Western unlike those you may have read before. Oh yes did I mention the sex? Brandvold takes the basic characters from his Lou Prophet Westerns and changes the names, but not the sex, for the heroes here. Uriah and Angel both have dark secrets which play a big part in the story as well as the out come of the story.

Let me stop here and complain that Brandvold has his Gatling gun use a belt of bullets. Sorry but no the Gatling guns of this time used clips or round magazines but not belts.

One last parting shot, I really wanted Brandvold to write the story behind Lincoln adn Grant using werewolves to end the Civil War. Brandvold teased me with bits and pieces about this and I wanted to know the whys for importing the werewolves to fight the rebels. Maybe next time????

As a fan of westerns and a fan of science fiction, this book was a very welcome surprise. It has everything we look for in a Mean Pete western and a lot more. Witches, werewolves, vampires, and hobgobblins, wrapped around a bawdy romp in the old, wild west. What better opportunity to rewrite history? If we can have a dragon, why can't we have a 7 shot Colt and a Gatling Gun that one man can handle? I found this to be a very entertaining read and we have 2 more characters in the Brandvold arsenal that I would love to see again.
"Dust of the Damned" is a western genre novel where magic, horror and adventure collide in a tale of the Old West that is no place for greenhorns or sugar foots.

The usual characters are present, from the self-reliant and tough frontier hunter to the crazy outlaw gang. Mr. Brandvold breathes new life into the Old West through these heroes and villains, giving us hero characters that are easy to cheer for and bad guys that you want to see taken down.

The pacing and writing of the novel is easy to follow; the descriptions of the wild country place the reader right there. The action scenes are well executed, with the right amount of bullets and blood flying for a reader to have the full effect of the throw down action.

I recommend Dust to any reader who is a fan of horror or dark fantasy or an Old West fiction veteran who may want to check out something different from the normal bank robberies and cattle rustling in a west that is a little wilder.

Grab your hat and six-shooter and settle in for some adventure.
I've read some of Peter Brandvold's Westerns under his name as well as the Frank Leslie name, and I've enjoyed them as solid actioners that are quite a bit harder edged than anything Louis L'Amour ever wrote. And his latest release, Dust of the Damned, is way weirder than anything L'Amour wrote even back in his early pulp days.

Imagine a world where President Abraham Lincoln hired a gang of European werewolves called the Hell's Angels to help break the back of the South during the War Between the States. Brandvold did, and he elaborated his story from there. The author creates his own terminology for his creatures (vampires/swillers), but doesn't really blaze any new territory, which is a shame because no one has really played with the American Indian mythology and that could have potential been really cool.

Dust of the Damned is pulp of the first water. The author doesn't hold himself back in this one. Everything is fair, and the old West has never been weirder.

The opening sequences where the book's hero Uriah Zane, a supernatural bounty hunter, will let readers know right quick whether they want to buy into the pot on this particular tale. Zane is a man larger than life, built with a swagger and carries all his tools around in a coffin-shaped wagon. Those tools include the traditional hammer and stake for vampires, but also a liberated Gatling gun that spews silver bullets.

The initial battle with the vampires is attention getting and could easily translate to the movie screen. Vampires in underground lairs with the sun just setting has BIG MISTAKE written all over it, but since these are the opening chapters, readers don't have to worry too much. Still, it's an interesting look at Zane and the lengths he goes to in order to get the job done.

Once Zane is introduced, Brandvold quickly widens his cast of characters by introducing US Marshal Aubrey Coffin, who also tracks down the spooky in the Old West. She's an immediate departure for the times because there never was a female US Marshal in the history of the Old West that I'm aware of, and her sensibilities are more 21st century than 19th.

The Hell's Angels include Charlie Hondo, the leader of the werewolf pack, but he's already thrown in with a Mexican witch that can raise the dead. One of the things that really bothered me about the werewolves is that they were supposed to be of European heritage, but they talked and acted like owlhoots. They didn't have to behave like refined gentlemen, but I would have liked at least a nod in that direction.

Dust of the Damned is a quick read and doesn't require a lot of digestion. Horses "fog" the trail and the gunfights come fast and furious. There's also a scattering of more supernatural forces at work that probably won't satisfy any true horror/monster fan looking for something new, but the book keeps moving.
