I downloaded this because the description sounded interesting, and while I am somewhat new to dystopian/post apocalyptic tales I have enjoyed a few. This one ultimately left me with such a bad taste in my head I am re-reading old favorites for a while to clear my palate.

Pros: Well written. Enough to keep me reeled in till the - extremely - bitter end. I would put it aside for a week, sometimes sickened, then pick it up again, unable to give up on it completely, even though the back of my head was advising otherwise. The characters, the situation, the outcome are all realistic and painfully likely in such future scenario.

Cons: relentlessly grim. Do not read this if, like me, you are the kind of reader who becomes immersed to the point of depression, because this will do it in great big ugly spades. The 'good guys' are grey, the bad guys are about as black as they come, the situation is pretty well hopeless, and all of this so well written, yet without the slightest leavening of humor. Others have given the story line, so I will not bother, but I, for one, find even a grim story benefits from an occasional slight loosening of tension, but this just kept ratcheting it up.

The main character is flawed in ways that make perfect sense in the situation, but do not remotely exonerate her for her actions, making it impossible to find anyone to identify with, and making it ever harder to sympathize over the troubles she brings on herself and others.

The final insult came with the cliffhanger ending. Nowhere, at the time I downloaded it, or currently, was there any indication that this was the start of a series - a part one of some sort - yet the sudden twist ending is clearly the set up for another book, leaving nothing resolved, and no end in sight. I for one will pass on the sequel(s) whenever they appear - my psyche has taken all the abuse I am willing to endure.

Pale Bricks is a dystopian/post apocalyptic story that takes place during a time after a nuclear war has caused a fear of contamination. Protection camps have been set up in order to keep the human race moving along. Everyone has their place and most accept that. Except for Simone. Simone questions the way things are and causes trouble all the time.

Simone has been orphaned and doesn’t remember her mom but there is some weird secret that involves both her mom and a tower that is in the forest. I have never rooted more for a character than I did for Simone.

This book is a little darker than I expected and didn’t have the ending I expected it to have which is fine and personally all the more reason I enjoyed it. Give me dark and twisted and I am a very happy girl. Probably the reason I am so addicted to dark and twisted horror movies HAHA.
This story had great potential but I guess the author didn't know what to do with it. There were some things that became quite annoying, such as all the eyebrow raising. In my 48 years I have seen 2, at the very most 3 people raise an eyebrow. It didn't matter the age, 6 or 60, someone raised an eyebrow every other page in this story. I guess the author can't write about any other facial expression besides eyebrow raising and the scrunching of a face was another one used way too much.

This story kept me engaged and wanting to keep reading even at times I had to put it down. The ending was abrupt and made very little sense. You are left with thousands of unanswered questions.

Simone's deceased mother is brought up all throughout the book and you NEVER find out what really happened to her. Even when 10 years old Isabelle was trying to tell Simone the truth she was cut off.

Why did they steal guard uniforms and wear them under their regular clothes for weeks (and they didn't make them look pudgy to the guards)? We never find out the reason because they were never mentioned during the rebellion. Rebellion? Not really. The author had so many things going that she could have had fun with but she didn't take advantage of her own story telling.

What happened in the fields during the so called rebellion? We never know because again the author didn't take advantage of her story telling. The author had so many opportunities to make this an amazing book but she didn't. Maybe she's lacking in being able to describe details.

Whatever the reason for the lack of details after the book being so engrossing, the ending has left such a bad taste in my mouth. I am really quite irritated that I wasted my time on this book but also the money. $2.99 is cheap yes, but there are so many other books available I could have spent that money on.

Unless the author writes a second book, short story or at the very least, a short prequel, I do not recommend wasting your time on this book. Especially with the unanswered questions of the ending.
I was so wrapped up in this story . What a roller coaster ride. KL Stein is a true story teller. Pale Bricks starts out with a rush, kicks into high gear, and finishes with a high Octain charge. The only downfall is the reader is left hanging over the edge with one hand holding on. It ends in the worst possible place, and where is the next part? I'm not seeing it...... my mind is racing for closure and I can't see when it'll come. I'm praying it'll be soon. It's too good of a story to be unfinished
This book was no joke.

Meaty, full of suspense. A dystopian page-turner. My favorite part of it was the rich setting. Some of the descriptions were downright stunning. Stein also isn't afraid to break your heart, hitting emotional highs and lows throughout the story.
