This book is a great collection with many surprises in the short stories inside it's cover. It will not take you long to see how one story shares an element with the first, and then another element with the one that follows that. Many times I finished a short story and find myself leaning back, catching my breath and in awe of the twists, both heartfelt and gruesome. There is action and tests, internal and external conflicts. Each writer having a unique voice for their fantasy and science fiction tellings. From the mother in brawl fights to pay for an escape from the scum to women who outwit their opponents. Many different ways to fight are presented here, not all of them win either. Blood is spilled, tears fall, and I promise any reader looking for a speculative suspense and action packed collection will find this a joy!

Fight Like A Girl eBook Juliet E McKenna Sophie E Tallis Kim LakinSmith Dolly Garland Joanne Hall Roz Clarke Reviews
From the exotic depths of alien space to futuristic slums, from down-to-earth fantasy realms to those embraced by gods, this anthology features female fighters in all their forms. The worldbuilding and action scenes are highlights of these tales; the fights are tense and engrossing, and the worlds feel authentic and lived-in. (There were a few cases where the worldbuilding became heavy; too much information that didn't always contribute. I wondered if these were stories that attached to a novel or larger series.)
The stories range from traditional arcs to vignettes - snapshots of a day in the life that (generally) resolve in satisfying fashion, regardless of loose ends. A couple didn't work for me because they felt as if they ended too early I was unhappy not having the answer to the question, "What next?" There were also a few brilliant twists.
Another facet of this anthology I appreciated was the organization of the stories. The first story shows the female character a distance; the second takes the reader closer ... and then we step into the skin of the lady protagonist. It's a great journey.
This book has a good selection of stories for fantasy and Sci-Fi lovers, each story set in different land or time, but one thing in common, each story had a woman that was not afraid to kick some ass. Every woman had a story to tell whether they were a sword for hire, a mother, a soldier or just fighting to survive, they had to act on their wits and they were there to prove that there is nothing wrong in fighting like a girl.
So not to go on for ever I am going to review the stories that really grabbed my attention.
The Coyote by KR Green Set in dystopian Brighton, Kai is a young girl with a very good sense of hearing. This talent had helped through many a scrape. A member of the Circlet, Kai, is a highly trained fighter and is on a mission to try and bring peace to the Buddhist community. Throughout, this short story was full of action, with Kai relying on her hearing to get the mission done, this made it an intense read.
Vocho’s Night out by Julia Knight Vocho and Kacha are brother and sister, working for the guild, they are hired to protect a mysterious cargo. After a failed attempt to steal the cargo, they work together to find the real reason why they were hired. Like most siblings they are in competition with each other to be the best and as both are experienced sword fighters this does get interesting. I found this story to be a fun read, and the ending was comical. This has been a good introduction to the Duellists trilogy which I now want to read.
Fire and Ash by Gaie Sebold Riven is a soldier who is suffering with PTSD. The last of the Dancers, a renowned troop she lost all her colleagues in one epic battle. Not wanting to go on any more with her life, she prepares to die until a ring changes her mind. Whilst reading this story, I felt really sorry for Riven with everything she went through, but whilst on this journey her character changes to determination, she gets stronger and you are willing her to survive and to learn to live.
A quick mention about the cover, when I saw this I had to smile to myself as when I was little girl I used to have a book of paper dolls to dress up and I wish that my dolls had outfits like these on the cover.
I must be honest I had not read anything before by these authors and I have kept asking myself why not. Each story was well written and celebrates women. Now every time I hear you fight like a girl, I will know that it is a compliment as if I or any other girl fights like the girls in these stories then they will be strong, resourceful and not take any nonsense.
A great collection of stories that will keep your interest from the first word
Should someone tell you, 'You fight like a girl', show 'em how it's done! That's what this book does! I have always has to fight like a boy, growing up with a brother and mostly boy cousins, but I grew up on Girl Power (Punky Brewster, for those who know who that is) and this books has stories just like that. The Introduction, written by Anne Lyle, is like my past on paper- from the love of Doctor Who's Tom Baker to Ripley of the Alien series, having been originally made for a man, but made better because he was changed into a woman. Girls can throw down too, and this book shows just how bad they can be
There are sixteen stories in this book and honestly, I can't tell you which I loved the most. Each fantastic story is written with a woman hero in mind. First, I have to admit, the cover caught my attention more than anything else.
The fact that FIRST, it's a paper doll and she's giving you the stink-eye. I love it- plus I have Ginger-Envy so that makes her just that much better. Then she's got all the toys a tomboy, like myself, would want- depending on the situation. She's tough and has everything she needs to stand on her own feet, which is what this book's all about.

**ePdf was gifted from author, Joanne Hall for an honest review.
As with any anthology, there's a mix of writing styles. Some stories I loved, some were more so-so for me. But I loved the book and the concept of having all these stories of strong females. As for the review questions asks I rated the writing style as good...some of it was great, one or two stories I found to be okay...so I went with the average. Yes there's violence...it's called "Fight Like a Girl"...so yeah, expect violence. There's some sexual content. "How is the story narrated"...well that depends on the story. There's a variety. I thought this was a great collection of stories of fierce women!
