Chuckles the Clown "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants."
The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show holds a special place in my heart, as it does for the author, Tricia Stewart Shiu. The protagonist of this novel, Sarah, had a special alter for Mary, and she would often ask "What would Mary do?" Mary was smart, ambitious, beautiful, very likable, and everyone seemed to love her. If only the real world was like that, throw your hat in the air, and take what comes.
Sarah works in LA, she is an executive assistant to a high powered studio executive. I have had some difficult jobs, but nothing compared to this dog eat dog world. Stepping on someone else's toes was the way things were done. Being nice was okay for the first day, but then everyone around you trying to work their way up the ladder would just as soon step all over you. Sarah and her boss were relegated/downgraded to Building 99 soon after we meet her. This is the equivalent of being sent to Siberia. Sarah takes it in stride, tries to do her job, is noticed for her efficiency and good things happen. But then the stepping on toes becomes stepping on heads, the competition gets worse. Sarah is at a place in her life where she is trying to discover who she is,where she is, and what she wants. Her romantic life is kaput, until she has a bite in the butt from a dog belonging to a very attractive person. Things are looking up, someone to talk to.
Office gossip, whispers, are part of the day to day existence, someone is nice when they want something. How do you stay sane in an atmosphere such as this? The author shares some of these experiences in her work as a high level executive in a top studio. Sarah Marks came from a very dysfunctional family, and she was on her own at an early age learning how to survive. Mary Tyler Moore became a role model of sorts, , helping via imagery to guide Sarah through her early years. Once Sarah found a little stability she was able to put Mary away, but she was like family. Mary Tyler Moore was the woman many of us wanted to be, and this was right in the heyday of women's lib.
This is a book that caught my eye, and drew me in wondering how an individual could survive in this kind of industry, with such competitive forces. The writing alternates between present day to early days with parents and then to ask Mary, "What would you do?" A nice sequential process that brings us to some understanding.

In her extraordinary new novel, “Please Hold,” 25 time award-winning author and acclaimed spiritualist Tricia Stewart Shiu takes us into both the highly competitive world of the Hollywood studio system and sensitive, belittled and searching mind of protagonist Sarah Marks. Sarah, is what is referred to as a gatekeeper, working for top level studio executives in Los Angeles, the capitol of the entertainment work. A highly competent executive assistant, Sarah is quirky, lonely and stuck – the victim of highly dysfunctional parents and forever unable to find her own authentic place in the world. Without actual living role models, she’s built a shrine to Mary Tyler Moore in her apartment and prays to the actress who, in the highly fantasized world of television sitcoms, has the ability to “turn the world on with a smile” and “take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.” As Sarah navigates the shark infested waters of the entertainment industry, Shiu shows us a woman trying to stay adrift and alive. The remarkable journey Sarah Marks makes is both redemptive and reaffirming, reminding us that true happiness can be found despite nearly insurmountable odds.
Shiu culls much of the action in “Please Hold” from her own life experience as a “veteran, high level executive assistant at one of the top six entertainment studios of Los Angeles.” This first-hand experience allows her to write with razor sharp honesty and wit. From the outset, we learn that Sarah has been “downgraded” to “Building 99” which is a kind of gulag to which certain workers are sent in exile, “so far away executives are issued golf carts.” And while much of “Please Hold” takes place in office space, Shiu allows us direct access to Sarah’s eccentric and, at times, desperate thoughts. At times it seems the author spends more time in Sarah’s head, than anywhere else. Written in the first person, we follow Sarah through the unsettling ways of her environment as her mind works overtime on survival skills. If only Sarah’s life could be more like her patron saint Mary Tyler Moore, then perhaps she be as happy at Mary seemed to be on television.
While “Please Hold” is a richly humorous novel, Shiu seems more interested in the spiritual side of her chief character. We are struck again and again by Sarah’s vulnerability in such a cut throat environment and a deep profound soul to Sarah’s character. She’s may be lost or stuck, but her positive attitude that a better life is just around the corner is refreshing. Her luck seems to change greatly when she is offered a job with an even higher level studio boss, but we can almost feel the assault on her character as she is consistently undermined by yet another back stabbing co-worker.
The novel succeeds because it is able to display Sarah’s constant yearning for love. Since we spend so much time in her head, we cheer her on at every chance she gets to find it. When she finally experiences her epiphany and finds a partner with whom she is compatible, we feel like we are there with Sarah, enjoying her beautiful rewards.
“Please Hold” is Tricia Stewart Shiu’s most gratifying and relatable novel to date. It’s a highly entertaining and imaginative journey over the rainbow in Southern California in search of that proverbial pot of gold which Sarah Marks so mightily yearns for and deserves.
Thanks Tricia Stewart Shiu for this enjoyable romp into the world of Sarah Marks, an executive "gatekeeper" in the entertainment industry! Quite a interesting look behind closed doors of an executive assistant's ups and downs in a cutthroat profession.
